Causes Of Prolonged Prothrombin Time(PT)

Prothrombin time (PT) refers to the time required for plasma coagulation after the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin after adding an excess of tissue thromboplastin and an appropriate amount of calcium ions to platelet-deficient plasma. The high prothrombin time (PT), that is, the prolongation of the time, may be caused by various reasons such as congenital abnormal coagulation factors, acquired abnormal coagulation factors, abnormal blood anticoagulation status, etc. The main analysis is as follows:

1. Abnormal congenital coagulation factors: Abnormal production of any one of coagulation factors I, II, V, VII, and X in the body will lead to prolonged prothrombin time (PT). Patients can supplement coagulation factors under the guidance of doctors to improve this situation;

2. Abnormal acquired coagulation factors: common severe liver disease, vitamin K deficiency, hyperfibrinolysis, disseminated intravascular coagulation, etc., these factors will lead to the lack of coagulation factors in patients, resulting in prolonged prothrombin time (PT). Specific causes need to be identified for targeted treatment. For example, patients with vitamin K deficiency can be treated with intravenous vitamin K1 supplementation to promote the return of prothrombin time to normal;

3. Abnormal blood anticoagulation state: there are anticoagulant substances in the blood or the patient uses anticoagulant drugs, such as aspirin and other drugs, which have anticoagulant effects, which will affect the coagulation mechanism and prolong the prothrombin time (PT). It is recommended that patients stop anticoagulant drugs under the guidance of doctors and switch to other methods of treatment.

Prothrombin time (PT) prolonged by more than 3 seconds has clinical significance. If it is only too high and does not exceed the normal value for 3 seconds, it can be closely observed, and special treatment is generally not required. If the prothrombin time (PT) is prolonged for too long, it is necessary to further find out the specific cause and carry out targeted treatment.
